Grand Dam

Ima Speculatin’s breeders were Mike and Carolyn McMillian of Ramona, Oklahoma. “Grulla” was born on March 1, 1975.
Bob bought her in 1979 because he liked her conformation and her athletic ability. He thought when he finished showing Grulla that she would make an excellent addition to the broodmare band. She spent her first spring with us in the calving lot. Bob soon recognized that she had lots of cow and it was just the break from the arena that Grulla needed.

When Grulla returned to the arena in the summer of 1980 she was ready to show the rest of the world what Bob recognized in her. She was the 1980 All Around Horse in Wyoming. She placed first in the reining, first in the working cowhorse, second in the calf roping, and third in the heeling. Grulla also earned her Performance Register of Merit in 1980. Over the course of her five year AQHA show career Grulla qualified for the World Show twice.

Her show career record indicates that Grulla won an AQHA halter point the only time she was shown at halter in the open class and Carol added another halter point in youth. Granddaughters, Crystal, Tonya and Kathy also showed her at halter in 4-H, as did the Fox girls.

Grulla earned 12 AQHA points in calf roping. She had tough competition in the calf roping because we were still hauling Tiny Bay Hancock (1980 top calf roping mare in the nation) and a five-time World Show Qualifier, and Chays Bear Fanny (1983 and 1985 Denver Stock Show calf roping champion).

Grulla also picked up 9 points in reining during her show career. Again she had tough competition from Vim Hank, one of the few geldings we hauled. Grulla was an awesome working cowhorse. She definitely had the reining ability and she had lots of natural cow. She accumulated 8 points in working cowhorse. I’m not sure who put the trail point on her but it was probably the result of filling a class to make it worth another point. Ranch riding prepares young horses for the trail class so we snuck in a sleeper there.

We rarely headed off of our calf roping mares, but we weren’t opposed to heeling off of them. Once again Grulla had tough competition but she racked up14 points in heeling, and Pat added another point in youth heeling. Pat didn’t have much time to travel with us to horse shows as he was busy in the hayfield. Grulla’s last AQHA show was July 15, 1984.

Grulla would not have made a rodeo horse because she hated long trailer rides. We solved that problem by hauling her on a slant or sideways and we continued to haul her to AQHA horse shows and to 4-H events.

We learned the hard way when Dorky broke her leg in the arena that we should always haul our mares bred. If they become injured they can go straight from the arena to raising their own babies.

Grulla’s first foal was Speck Doc, a 1982 dun stallion by The Hiberian. We loaned Grulla to the Fox girls for 4-H and youth rodeos and she didn’t raise babies for us those summers. We put her back into the broodmare band and her 1986 (Triple Speck) and 1987 (Speculatin Jack) grullo geldings were both by Triple Black Jack (by Triple Goldrush and out of Miss Toady Jack).

We pulled Grulla back out of the broodmare band so that the grandkids could use her in 4-H. Her 1990 foal was Hancock Dunny by Snip A Hancock (by Snippys Cowboy and out of Tiny Bay Hancock). One of Grulla’s sons, String Dunny (1991) by Strings Do (Piggin String 2 and out of Jordan Polly Do), is Bob’s favorite ranch gelding. He takes good care of Bob, by keeping a watchful eye on the young horses that are snubbed up to him during the halter breaking process. Speck Feature was Grulla’s 1993 model. This sorrel gelding was by Frosty Feature as was the last foal she had for us was born in 1995, Dunny Frosty Speck.

We still have both of Grulla’s daughters in the broodmare band. Ima String, a 1983 sorrel mare by Strings Do (Piggin String 2 and out of Jordan Polly Do), and Miss Ima Speculatin, a1992 grullo mare by Feature Jack (Frosty Feature and out of Miss Toady Jack).

The dun and grulla color are strong in Ima Speculatin’s pedigree. Her dam, Prego’s Coco, was a dun. There were four more duns recorded on the maternal pedigree, in addition to a buckskin and a grullo. Most of the paternal pedigree list N/A (Not Available) on the color; those that are listed are brown, bay, chestnut, and sorrel. But Ima Speculatin herself produced four duns, three grullos, and two sorrels.

Grulla’s show career ended in 1984 and her production career ended in 1995. She died after Dunny Frosty Speck was weaned. She had chipped a knee at some point and it was a handicap for her later years. We miss Grulla, She was fun to have around and the grandkids loved her as much as Bob did.
